Internship Opportunities

The CCS offers the opportunity for graduate student to conduct research at the centre. Interns are involved with preparing for their MA thesis or are post-MA students. They might also be engaged in assistance with events planning and general administrative support. These internships provide students with excellent opportunities for personal learning and development, as well as exposure to research skills, team-work, and networking for individuals to develop their future careers.

Applications for internships should be sent to the CCS with a motivation letter, indicating the area of research and the context in which the internship is located (e.g. preparing for field research for the thesis or study requirement of sending university). Timing for the stay at the CCS should be indicated; duration of an internship should generally be between four and eight weeks. Please note that the CCS does not provide remuneration for internships.

In order to apply, please email a motivation letter and a current resume to CCS Director, Dr. Sven Grimm at sgrimm@sun.ac.za.

Visiting Research Scholars

The Centre for Chinese Studies Visiting Scholar Program brings a number of international scholars to the Centre every year. Scholars have the opportunity to spend up to one year conducting their own research in South Africa, whilst working side by side with CCS staff and contributing to the ideas and intellectual debate surrounding China’s engagement with Africa.

Generally, our Visiting Scholars are established researchers or advanced PhD candidates whose research falls within the Centre’s active programmes. Research should be contributing to the research strands of the CCS or be complementary to these and should thus look into China-Africa relations, inner-Chinese drivers for external engagement or the comparison of China and other external actors in Africa. The output of the visiting fellowship should be a published contribution on a relevant aspect of China-Africa relations, including in CCS’ own publications, e.g. the China Monitor or as an occasional paper.

The CCS and Stellenbosch University have cooperation agreements with a number of Chinese institutions. The centre is particularly interested to host Chinese and African scholars as well as renowned scholars on China-Africa relations. The programme is provided in collaboration with the University of Stellenbosch, which provides access to the University library and its facilities. The Centre for Chinese Studies provides a working place (including internet access) as well as individualised research assistance and support from the CCS team.

In order to apply, please email a current resume and a brief statement of your research project including duration of stay to CCS Director, Dr. Sven Grimm at sgrimm@sun.ac.za.
