UNESCO/Peoples’ Republic of China – Great Wall Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme 2010 – 2011

With a view to promoting international exchanges in the field of education, culture, communication, science and technology, and to enhancing friendship among peoples of the world, the Government of the People’s Republic of China has placed at the disposal of UNESCO for the academic year 2010-2011, under the sponsorship of the Organization, twenty five (25) fellowships for advanced studies and two (2) more fellowships on agriculture-related subjects specially at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

These fellowships are for the benefit of developing Member States in Africa, Asia and the Pacific and certain countries in the Arab States (see list of invited countries in Annex I). The fellowships, tenable in a selected number of Chinese universities, are of one year duration or less. These fellowships, which are in most cases to be conducted in English, are offered to senior advanced students wishing to pursue higher studies or intending to undertake research mainly independently with periodic guidance from the assigned supervisor. In exceptional cases, candidates may be required to study the Chinese language prior to taking up research/study in their field of interest.

The PRC Ministry of Education grants 3 scholarships to students currently registered at Stellenbosch University to study in China. With support from the South African Department of Higher Education and Training, the Centre for Chinese Studies (CCS) at Stellenbosch University is active in marketing this opportunity to South African students and selecting future candidate students. Selected students should be representative of the following academic disciplines:

  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Architecture, Urban & Regional Planning
  • Business Studies, Management Science
  • Education, Teacher Training
  • Engineering, Technology
  • Geology
  • Mathematics, Informatics
  • Medical Sciences
  • Natural Sciences
  • Communications and Information Sciences
  • Alternative Energy Resources, Climate Change and Sustainable Development

 The Chinese Government Scholarship includes: 

  • Accommodation on the university campus
  • Registration and tuition fees
  • Medical care
  • Basic learning materials
  • Monthly stipend

 Applicants must:

  • Be South African citizens
  • Be registered students at Stellenbosch University
  • Complete an application form for the Chinese Scholarship Council
  • Provide certified copies of academic transcripts and degree certificates
  • Submit a research motivation of between 200 and 500 words
  • Submit a list of preferred institutions at which to study
  • Provide two letters of reference from academic superiors 
  • Complete a medical examination form
