Since its establishment five years ago, the Centre for Chinese Studies (CCS) at Stellenbosch University has become the leading institution in sub-Saharan Africa for research and analysis on China-Africa relations.
Serving an array of stakeholders in the public, private and academic sectors in Africa and beyond, the Centre has helped to advance knowledge and expertise on China’s economic and developmental role on the continent. Through its various seminar programmes, discussion forums and international networks the Centre also facilitated exchange and debate on China-Africa subjects.
Stellenbosch University is committed to building on the achievements of the CCS and advancing it into the premier academic centre devoted to the production of substantive research on China-Africa relations within the context of a rapidly changing international environment. The profile of the CCS as a major hub for academic exchange and research will be enhanced.
This strategic vision will drive the activities of the CCS in 2010. Through the building out of research programmes dedicated to the cultivation of deeper knowledge of China’s role in specific sectors in Africa; exploration of the related political and economic impacts on the continent; and expansion of academic dissemination and training, the Centre will enhance its position as a resource nucleus for the research, government, business and NGO communities.
We look forward to maintaining productive working relationships with key stakeholders in these communities and to develop new cooperative linkages in our strategic pursuits for 2010.
