UNESCO/People's Republic of China - Great Wall Co-sponsored fellowships programme 2009

With a view to promoting international exchanges in the field of education, culture, communication, science and technology, and to enhancing friendship among peoples of the world, the Government of the People’s Republic of China has placed at the disposal of UNESCO for the academic year 2009-2010, under the sponsorship of the Organisation, 25 fellowships for advanced studies and 2 more fellowships on agriculture-related subjects, mainly at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  The fellowships, tenable in a selected number of Chinese universities, are for one year or less. They are offered to senior advanced students wishing to pursue higher studies or undertake research. In exceptional cases, candidates may be required to study the Chinese language prior to taking up research/study in their field of study.

The Fellowship includes:
  • Living allowance of CNY 1.100 yuan for General Scholars and CNY 1.400 yuan for Senior Scholars (meals and pocket expenses)
  • One-off settlement subsidy of CNY 300 yuan for 6 month studies and CNY 600 yuan for 1 year studies
  • Registration, tuition fes, laboratory fees and learning materials
  • Accommodation on the university campus (2 students share 1 room)
  • Medical care (outpatient/ in-hospital, comprehensive medical insurance, benefit plan against diseases and accidents)
  • One-off inter-city travel ticket, China
Offered by UNESCO:
  • Return flight to China
  • Monthly stipend of 150USD (to be paid in local currency)

Note:
The fellowship does not include funds or accommodation for spouses or family members.


Applicants must:
  • Be South African
  • Hold at least the equivalent of a Master’s Degree; or a BSc Degree for agricultural related studies
  • Be proficient in English
  • Be under the age of 45 years
  • Be in good health
Application Procedure:

All applications should be endorsed by the relevant South African Government body and must be submitted with the following attachments:
  • 3 copies of completed application form for China/UNESCO The Great Wall Fellowship
  • 3 passport size photographs
  • 3 certified copies of diplomas and certificates, and transcripts of complete academic records
  • 3 copies of the university’s invitation letter, for those students who have been admitted in advance by a Chinese university
  • 3 copies of two letters of recommendation (in English) by professors or associate professors familiar with the work of the candidate
  • 3 copies of a research proposal containing no less than 400 words (in English) of the post-graduate study to be undertaken during the candidate’s stay in China
  • 3 copies of a Foreigner Physical Examination form to be completed in March or April 2008
  • 3 copies of an English language proficiency certificate

 When completing the form, each candidate is requested to specify 3 possible host institutions in China indicating one field of study as personal preference. (Applicants may wish to visit the China Scholarship Council website: www. csc.ed.cn “Study in China” and “Chinese Institutions admitting International Students” for details regarding these host institutions.  For further details on participating Chinese universities, please consult the list of institutions and their respective fields of study.

Chinese Government Scholarships 2009

The PRC Ministry of Education has provided 3 Fully Funded Scholarships for South African students to study in the PRC for the 2009/2010 academic year. With support from the South African Department of Education, the CCS is active in marketing this opportunity to South African students and selecting future candidate students.

The CCS has previously selected a number of students for these scholarships who are now studying at Chinese institutions. The scholarships are available for undergraduate and post-graduate studies.

The Chinese Government Scholarship includes:

  • Accommodation on the university campus
  • Registration and tuition fees
  • Medical care
  • Basic learning materials
  • Monthly stipend
  • A hard-seat train ticket between the port of entry on registration or the port of departure on graduation and the city where the host university or the university of Chinese language studies is located (a hard-berth train ticket for over-night trip).

Educational background and age limit:

  • Undergraduate: senior high school or above, under the age of 25
  • Masters: bachelor’s degree or above, under the age of 35
  • Doctoral: master’s degree or above, under the age of 40
  • Chinese language students: senior high school or above, under the age of 35
  • General scholar: two years of undergraduate studies or above, under the age of 45
  • Senior scholar: master or higher degree or hold academic titles of associate professor or higher, under the age of 50

Applicants must:

  • Be non-Chinese South Africans
  • Be in good health

Applications must include:

  • A completed application form for the Chinese Government Scholarship
  • Certified copies of academic qualifications, certificates, diploma’s and academic transcripts
  • Copies of recommendation letters
  • Completed Foreigner Physical Examination form
  • Copies of an English language proficiency certificate
  • A research proposal for any post-graduate study to be undertaken

The Summer School Scholarships 2009: Buddhism in China -Chang'an

Sponsored by the Woodenfish Project, in collaboration with China's Northwest University, the "Buddhism in Chang'an" program offers graduate students in the West a unique opportunity for direct, intensive academic engagement with one of the most important historical centers of Buddhism in Asia: China's ancient cosmopolitan capital, Chang'an (modern Xi'an). Participants will study the history and culture of Buddhism in Chang'an through daily seminars with accomplished faculty at Northwest University and guided tours of temples, ruins, and other historical sites in and around the city. Special attention will be paid to introducing participants to potential sources and avenues for research and promoting interaction with Chinese scholars.

The Summer School will take place from: July 20 2009 through August 9 2009

 Educational background & Requirements:

Eligible applicants will be graduate students currently enrolled in MA or PhD programs in Western countries who have a primary research interest in Chinese Buddhism or related fields (such as Buddhism in other Asian countries, Chinese religion, Eastern philosophy, Buddhist art history, Medieval Chinese history, etc.). Proficiency in spoken and written Chinese is encouraged, but not a necessary condition for applying to the program.
 
The Summer School Scholarship includes:

  • Room and board
  • Local transportation to sites will be provided
  • The lectures are sponsored by the Woodenfish Project (found by Fo Guang Shan) and will be provided free of charge for each participant for the duration of the program.
